Over the years I have interviewed so many stars and heroes. It Started at Piccadilly in Manchester Favourites were Cliff (many times), Elton (who I told not to swear) Doctor Hook, who turned a twenty minute interview into a take over for the programme. Frankie Valli (a real gentleman), Beach Boy Bruce Johnson but my favourite of all was Graham Nash of the Hollies and Crosby Still Nash & Young fame. He didn’t usually do radio chats but actually phoned me up one evening and said he was enjoying the show so much he wanted to come on. On BBC Radio Kent Timothy B Schmidt and Joe Walsh of the Eagles, Chris Squire of Yes, Andy Williams(another perfect gent), the Pretty Things who played live as did two of Dire Straits and Beautiful South. Dion who talked about touring with with the pop legend Buddy Holly.
Ronan O’Rahilly founded Radio Caroline in 1964 after he had problems getting airplay time at the BBC and Radio Luxembourg for his artists including Georgie fame and Alexis Corner. He was a popular businessman and showbusiness impresario in the London club scene of the 1960’s and also managed james Bond star George Lazenby. Ronan named his station Caroline after seeing a photo of Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK and his wife Jackie. Sadly Ronan died on Monday 20th April 2020 after having been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013. Johnnie Walker tweeted: "Farewell to Radio Caroline founder Ronan O'Rahilly, The man who made the impossible possible and changed radio forever. "Thanks Ronan for the incredible experience of being a Caroline deejay and to challenge the Government in 1967. You were an amazing man."
